Oh Hell (Bust)

Play Bust or Oh Hell is a game based on tricks. This game is more about luck than strategy. The game originated in the United Kingdom. It is played by three to seven players.

The game is best played by four players. One of the players in the game is normally the scorekeeper.

Players take turns placing cards on the playing table. The person with the highest card wins the first trick.

The winner of the first trick then kicks off the next trick.

This process proceeds until all the cards have been played. Players score points by winning tricks.

Dealing the Cards

The game uses a normal card deck of 52 cards. The dealer issues all the cards in the deck in order, starting with the player on their left. All the players are given an equal number of cards.

The trump suit is determined by turning over the top card of the remaining cards in a deck. In a game that all cards go out, it is advisable to cut the cards before dealing them out to get the trump suit.

Placing a Bid

Bidding begins with the player on the left side of the dealer. This player can bid any amount of trick that they like.

The maximum bids that they can place are the total number of cards that each player has received. Bidding is dictated by the trump cards and high cards that players have.

The bids of other players also affects a player’s bidding. Bidding happens in a clockwise direction until it goes back to the dealer who is the final bidder.

Players in this game are also allowed to bid as a group. Every player, apart from the dealer, is allowed to bid many bids. This is restricted to the number of cards that each player has.

Scoring

The scorekeeper gives the total result showing everybody’s performance after all the tricks are over.

If you made your bids well and scored one point per trick, plus an additional bonus of 10 points, you are surely an indisputable winner. Your score is an obvious zero if you failed.

The winner of this game is the player with the highest number of points after playing the last deal.

Steps of Playing Bust

The tricks-based game has some fundamental steps which are followed in play. These are:

• Order of Bust

The dealer deals with a specific number of cards in each round of the game. These cards are sorted from a deck of cards that doesn’t contain the jokers’ card.

These cards are given to every player including the dealer. Players deal with one card in the first session, two cards in the second and three cards in the third session.

The number of cards used to play increase as the number rounds increase.

• The suit

Once the dealer is done dealing, he cuts the remaining deck to get the suit. The suit drawn becomes the trump for that specific round.

• First Player

The player on the left side of the dealer is normally the first player to bid. Players can place any number of bids as long as it is within the number of cards played on that round. Bids are recorded on the score sheet by the dealer.

There is a possibility of the game not having a loser if the number of cards is exactly equal to the total sum of bids.

• Winner Plays First

The player to the left of the dealer kicks off the game. Players follow on in a clockwise direction. The winner of the first trick leads the next round.

• Tallying Score

The dealer tallies the score after all cards have been depleted. A player receives 10 points if he picks the exact number of tricks he bid. For instance, if a player bids 6 and picks, he will have 16 points.

This is due to the 10 points gained due to matching numbers. A player gets zero points if they do not match their pick to their trick. For instance, if a player bids 4 and picks 7, he will get 0 points.

• The next dealer

One of the players in this game is made the dealer. The rules allow the dealer of a game to change after every round. The player on the left side of the dealer becomes the dealer in the next round.

• End of the Game

The game comes to an end once the cards cannot be equally shared among the players. This is when the dealer produces the score sheet to pronounce the winner.

The game can also be stopped once a player reaches 100 points and becomes an automatic winner.

Rules of the game

To be a great Bust player, you will need to learn the rules first. Just like any other great game, Bust is also run by a set of rules. Only 3 to 7 players are allowed to play this game.

The game uses standard card packs. Cards are ranked according to their natural order with aces being the highest.

The bust game is played in a clockwise direction. The player on the left side of the dealer is always the first player to play. The winner of a trick leads the next round.

The format may appear complicated on paper, but taking part in the actual game reveals how easy and exciting it really is.
