Spades

Objective:

The objective of Spades is to be the first player or team to reach a predetermined score by winning tricks and accurately predicting the number of tricks you can win.

Setup:

Best NZ casinos ranked

  1. Spades is typically played with four players, divided into two teams. The game is played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards.
  2. Determine the partnerships by randomly assigning players to teams or by mutual agreement.
  3. Decide on a target score, usually 500 points or any agreed-upon number.

Card Rankings:

In Spades, the card rankings are as follows:

  • Cards rank in the standard order from Ace (high) to 2 (low).
  • The spades suit is considered the highest-ranking suit.

Gameplay:

  1. The player to the dealer’s left starts the game, and the turns proceed clockwise.
  2. Each player, in turn, plays a card from their hand, following suit if possible. If a player cannot follow suit, they can play any card, including a spade.
  3. The player who plays the highest-ranking card of the suit led wins the trick and collects the cards.
  4. The winning player leads the next trick by playing any card from their hand.
  5. Players must always follow suit if they have a card of the suit led. If unable to follow suit, they may play any card, including a spade.
  6. The trick continues until all four players have played a card.
  7. After each trick, the cards are gathered, and the player who won the trick leads the next trick.
  8. The game continues with players playing tricks until all the cards in their hands have been played.

Bidding and Scoring:

  1. Before the start of each round, players bid on the number of tricks they believe they can win during the round.
  2. The bid represents the number of tricks a player or team believes they can win.
  3. Each player places a bid starting with the player to the dealer’s left and going clockwise.
  4. The total number of tricks bid by all players must not equal the total number of tricks available in the round.
  5. The team that wins the bid must win at least the number of tricks they bid to score points. If they fail to win the bid, they score no points.
  6. Points are awarded based on the number of tricks won and the bid made by each team. Additional points can be scored by winning “sandbag” tricks (tricks over the team’s bid).
  7. The game continues until one team reaches the predetermined target score.

Tips:

  • Communication and teamwork are essential in Spades. Coordinate with your partner and try to anticipate their moves.
  • Pay attention to the cards played by other players and keep track of the cards that have been played.
  • Use strategy to try and prevent your opponents from making their bids.
  • Be cautious when bidding and consider the strength of your hand before committing to a bid.

Spades is a challenging and strategic card game that requires skillful card play and accurate bidding. With this guide, you’re ready to start playing and enjoy the competitive nature of Spades!
