An individual player decides which of the cards in their hand match the current playing description.

Hoping the judge will be convinced that your card is the best. This happens to tons of cards in this version – the same game doesn’t come up twice.

The objective of the game

The primary purpose of this game is for a player to win as many rounds as possible.

Each player is expected to match a red object card with a green descriptive card.

The player that has the strongest pairing then becomes the winner.

How to play

Learning the rules of Apples to Apples is easy and fun: deal the deck, choose a judge, and let the excitement start!

1: Decide the number of players that will play

The group of friends who want to play the game should come together. All players should form a circle on the floor or arrange themselves around a table.

While it is best played with 4-10 players, certain versions accommodate more players. With fewer players, the game becomes faster-paced, increasing hilarity.

2: Shuffle the decks of cards

Begin with a thorough shuffling of the green and red decks of cards. This ensures the cards are drawn in random order.

All cards from both red and green decks will be used during each playing round. Separate the decks – don’t mix up the green cards and the red cards within a deck.

Make sure you shuffle at the end of each game to ensure the same cards are not dealt and played in the next round.

3: Choose a Judge for the First Round

For the first round of gameplay, decide who will be the judge. The judge’s work is to determine the player with the best match and who emerges as the winner in each round.

All players have the chance to judge as the position is passed on to the left player at the end of a game round.

The winning red card may be picked by judges for several reasons. A judge might select the powerful direct match. This might be a green card reading “Sharp” for a red card reading “Scissors.”

Another may favor humorous or ironic association. The game becomes exciting with these types of differences.

Each player will take several turns as the judge, so who starts the game off doesn’t matter.

4: Deals seven red cards to each player

The judge that is chosen in the first round, who also acts as the leader, deals seven red cards to individual players around the table. Your red cards are rechargeable after every round, this means that each player must have seven red cards at the beginning of a new game.

Once each player holds seven red cards, the game can start.

Be vigilant over your red cards to ensure there are up to seven always. Otherwise, your playable options may be limited.

The rules of the game

Apples to apples game has simple rules, which include:

  • Red cards: show a person, thing, place, or an event
  • Green cards: define the properties of a person, thing, place, or an event
  • Blank cards: let players keep writing for additional personalized gameplay

Playing and winning

Step 1: The judge selects a green card from the stack’s top and announces it out to the group.

Step 2: All players, minus the judge, select the red apple card that best illustrates the word on the green card played by the judge. The cards are played facing down apart from the green card.

Step 3: The red apple cards are now mixed by the judge who picks one of them he/she thinks describes the word on the green card best. A green apple card is awarded to the player whose red card is picked.

Step 4: The winner emerges at the end of the game, and this is the player with the maximum number of green cards. The required number of green cards that will determine the winner can be specified before the start of the game.

Best playing strategies

  • The judge mostly picks the card with the most interesting and creative response. This allows a player to play a red card that is not a perfect fit.
  • Players can comment on a card during the game; this convinces the judge to select a particular card.
  • Knowing something about the judge will be interesting. This can help in picking a red card relating to him/her, thus increasing the opportunity of the judge choosing your card.
  • When it comes to picking a card, there are no restrictions. It gives you abundant space when it’s time for you to judge.
